Although some of these were independent countries in their own
right before Tsarist or Soviet annexation, their cultures were
soon submerged by that of Russia. Until the break-up of the Soviet
Union in the 1980s and 90s, these component states were presented
to the Western world as a united whole. Their sportsmen competed
under the banner of the USSR and ethnic Russians lived in even
the most distant Asian Republics. This had the effect of spreading
Russian names, language and traditions throughout the Soviet Union
and even after independence has been gained by many of its former
Republics, the names of their people, especially first names,
are similar to those of Russia.
